Neonatal Endocrinology

Common Neonatal Endocrine Conditions:

Hypothyroidism: Congenital hypothyroidism is a condition where the thyroid gland doesn't produce enough thyroid hormones, which are crucial for normal growth and development. Newborns are typically screened for hypothyroidism shortly after birth.

Hyperthyroidism: While rare, hyperthyroidism can occur in newborns due to the passage of maternal antibodies, causing excessive thyroid hormone production.

Adrenal Disorders: Conditions affecting the adrenal glands, such as congenital adrenal hyperplasia (CAH), can lead to imbalances in adrenal hormones.

Hypoglycemia: Disorders affecting glucose regulation, such as hyperinsulinism or glycogen storage diseases, can lead to low blood sugar levels in neonates. To know more about neonatal hypoglycemia, please click here.
